After completing a doctorate in accounting at the University of Waterloo in Canada in 2001, Dr. Pittman joined Memorial University where he holds the Chair in Corporate Governance and Transparency.

Dr. Pittman’s research primarily involves analyzing the role that firm- and country-level governance structures play in shaping economic outcomes in private and public companies. Although Dr. Pittman mainly publishes in such major accounting journals as The Accounting Review; the Journal of Accounting Research, the Journal of Accounting and Economics, Contemporary Accounting Research (where he is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief), and Accounting, Organizations and Society, his archival research also appears in top finance (e.g., the Journal of Financial Economics) and ethics (e.g., the Journal of Business Ethics) outlets.  Dr. Pittman has held visiting positions at other top universities, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
