When Andrew Igo ’19, M.S. ’20, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma as a middle school student, he learned very quickly that he was not fighting alone. His family and friends formed ‘Team Igo,’ sporting t-shirts supporting him in his battle against the bone and soft tissue cancer, even going so far as to help renovate his family’s basement into a ‘man cave’ where Igo could recover from his bi-weekly chemotherapy treatments. Igo carried that motivation with him to Blacksburg, where he became involved with the Appalachia Service Project at Virginia Tech (ASP-VT) shortly after beginning his freshman year.

For Genna Coan, the preparation to become a financial planner never stops. It doesn’t stop when the semester ends. It doesn’t even stop to ring the closing bell for the Nasdaq Stock Market. Coan was one of 12 students nationwide to be awarded the $5,000 2019 TD Ameritrade Institutional RIA NextGen Scholarship. The scholarship, which was open to all first-, second-, or third-year students pursuing a degree in finance or financial planning, required applicants to submit an essay as to why they would like to work in financial planning along with a letter of reference from a personal or academic contact. To celebrate the achievement, the scholarship recipients were hosted by TD Ameritrade Institutional on a visit to New York City and the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square, where the students helped ring the stock exchange’s closing bell on July 23, 2019.

Jacob Shortt has been awarded Pamplin's 2019 Certificate of Teaching Excellence. Jacob Shortt has been with Virginia Tech since the Fall of 2016. He has taught Intermediate Accounting Part I and Part II, Accounting Systems and Controls, and most recently a newly created class, Accounting Analytics. Jacob developed the Accounting Analytics course over the Summer of 2018 with the input of his colleagues and through insights gained from the 2018 American Accounting Association Intensive Data and Analytics Summer Workshop. He first taught this course in the Fall of 2018 and continues to teach it.
